The Intoxicating Sweetness Of Light Blue Sheets: Strawberry Launch’s New Summer Single

Synths– pop-coded and high-energy– layered with the lyrics “you’re so intimidating, golden lady, pretty baby” are the first sounds you’ll hear on Strawberry Launch’s brand-new single Light Blue Sheets. The first thing you’ll feel? If you’re around my age, probably some nostalgia– the delicious kind. Nearly immediately. It’s that specific brand of pop nostalgia that almost ironically and simultaneously builds this sweet longing that makes you smile from your stomach.

Light Blue Sheets is the second single the NYC-based pop-rock band has put out this year with Trash Casual Records. The track feels like something that might play in your teenage self’s bedroom– you could almost sing it into a hairbrush like that Lizzie Mcguire Movie intro. And sure, light blue sheets might be found in such a room, but then they’re also breezy as the cloud-like quality of Strawberry Launch’s sound. And they add a sort of sweetness to the intimacy of the lyrics “while you're kissing me”.

With their signature glittery allure, Strawberry Launch was able to create the feeling of having a crush (like– the good part of having a crush) through song. Naturally, it includes a healthy dose of that unnecessary but intoxicating feeling that you could soar into the light blue sky. It sympathizes with the uncontrollable butterflies that can only be stirred up by someone else’s unshakable cool– “dark eyes and a big smile// secret keeper, aim to please her”. That’s probably, in part, thanks to the pretty, psychedelic sounds embedded in the single that the band has such mastery in. But it also must have something to do with lyrics that capture that specific all-consuming adoration of the little things like: “Lip gloss shining with your words” or “you when you cry/ when you wish me goodnight/ when your teeth get red from a glass of wine.”

On that note, another highlight of the song: the cathartic, begs-to-be-sun-along-to chorus. It’s a turn-it-up chorus, a roll-the-windows-down chorus. It’s the chorus the little DJs in our minds will play over and over as we walk down the streets under the too-hot sun.

With Light Blue Sheets, Strawberry Launch brings us a summer track that embodies the sweetness of kisses and the gooey deliciousness at the center of human longing. Something so sweet it urges you to keep going back for seconds.

I could go on describing things that create a similar euphoria to the one you get from Light Blue Sheets. But the song is out everywhere now, so you’ll have to let me know if you think it tastes like lemonade, and gosh when is the last time you had lemonade…
